Photograph: STR\/AFP\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div>\n<p data-link-name=\"byline\" data-component=\"meta-byline\">Agence France-Presse<\/p>\n<p><time itemprop=\"datePublished\" datetime=\"2016-04-21T06:16:38-0400\" data-timestamp=\"1461233798000\">Thursday 21 April 2016\u00a006.16\u00a0EDT<\/time><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-test-id=\"article-review-body\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/vietnam\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Vietnam<\/a>\u00a0said on Thursday it was investigating whether pollution is to blame for a spate of mysterious mass fish deaths along the country\u2019s central coast after huge amounts of marine life washed ashore in recent days.<\/p>\n<p>Tonnes of fish, including rare species which live far offshore and in the deep, have been discovered on beaches along the country\u2019s central coastal provinces of Ha Tinh, Quang Tri, Quang Binh and Hue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have never seen anything like it,\u201d aquaculture official Nhu Van Can told AFP on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The strange situation first came to light when farmed fish in the area began dying in great numbers, he said, with locals later discovering huge numbers of dead fish on beaches.<\/p>\n<p>Local fishermen told state-run media that they are burying hundreds of kilograms of fish everyday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you sail just three miles offshore, you can see dead fish all over the ocean floor,\u201d the state-run Tuoi Tre quoted local fishermen as saying.<\/p>\n<p>Signs point to the fish having been poisoned by \u201cunidentified substances,\u201d Tran Dinh Du, deputy director of agriculture in Quang Binh province, said, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have asked people not to eat the fish and not use the fish as food for their livestock,\u201d Du added.<\/p>\n<p>State news outlet Thanh Nien quoted worried locals saying they dared not eat any of the washed up fish, adding in their report that \u201call signs (are) pointing to an environmental disaster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Central Ha Tinh province is home to a sprawling economic zone which houses numerous industrial plants, including a multi-billion dollar steel plant run by Taiwanese conglomerate Formosa.<\/p>\n<p>Hanoi has dispatched teams of environmental experts and officials to investigate the phenomenon, the Ministry of Environment said in a statement posted online.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must quickly establish whether the fish have died because of environmental pollution,\u201d environment minister, Tran Hong Ha said in the report.<\/p>\n<p>Vietnam has a long coastline and much of the country\u2019s export income depends on seafood, including farmed shrimp, catfish and wild-caught tuna.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the country earned $6.6bn from seafood exports.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2016\/apr\/21\/vietnam-investigates-mass-fish-deaths-pollution Vietnam investigates mass fish deaths Authorities are looking into whether pollution is to blame for a spate of mysterious mass fish deaths along the country\u2019s central coast \u00a0A villager shows dead sea fish he collected on a beach in Phu Loc district, in the central province of Thua Thien Hue.
