The sinking killed 304 people, most of them teenagers.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-2\" data-para-count=\"114\" data-total-count=\"1024\">The large death toll was often blamed on the lack of a quick and efficient early rescue effort by the government.<\/p>\n<figure data-videoid=\"100000003730450\" data-media-action=\"modal\" data-share-options-url=\"\" data-autoplay=\"false\" data-embedded=\"false\" aria-label=\"media\" role=\"group\"><figcaption>\n<h4>W.H.O. to Look Into MERS in South Korea<\/h4>\n<div>\n<p>Keiji Fukuda, the World Health Organization\u2019s assistant director general for health security, spoke on Tuesday with experts in the country to investigate the recent outbreak of MERS.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"story-continues-3\" data-para-count=\"169\" data-total-count=\"1193\">As the number of MERS cases has steadily increased in the past two weeks, the president\u2019s approval ratings have plunged below 40 percent, according to recent surveys.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-4\" data-para-count=\"341\" data-total-count=\"1534\">\u201cPresident Park has been mobilizing all national resources to deal actively with the MERS outbreak,\u201d Kim Sung-woo, Ms. Park\u2019s senior secretary for public relations, said during a news briefing on Wednesday. \u201cNonetheless, given the anxiety among the people over the situation, she has postponed her plan to visit the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-5\" data-para-count=\"179\" data-total-count=\"1713\">Ms. Park had planned to visit Washington from Sunday to June 18. She had hoped to discuss the growing nuclear and missile threats from North Korea and other issues with Mr. Obama.<\/p>\n<p id=\"story-continues-6\" data-para-count=\"234\" data-total-count=\"1947\">Mr. Kim, the presidential aide, said Ms. Park had decided to give priority to ensuring the \u201csafety of the people.\u201d He said that South Korea had already consulted with Washington and that the two allies would reschedule the visit.<\/p>\n<p data-para-count=\"148\" data-total-count=\"2095\"><a title=\"More news and information about South Korea.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/news\/international\/countriesandterritories\/southkorea\/index.html?inline=nyt-geo\">South Korea<\/a>\u00a0said on Tuesday that it would investigate all hospitalized pneumonia patients to determine whether they had been exposed to the disease.<\/p>\n<p data-para-count=\"48\" data-total-count=\"2143\">MERS symptoms are similar to those of pneumonia.<\/p>\n<p data-para-count=\"182\" data-total-count=\"2325\">Nearly 2,900 people who had been near any of the confirmed cases were isolated as of Tuesday, to be monitored for symptoms by the government.
