TOKYO – Groundwater radiation levels at Japan\u2019s crippled Fukushima nuclear plant have soared near a tank that leaked 300 tonnes of toxic water in August, struggling operator Tokyo Electric Power said.<\/h2>\n

TEPCO said water samples collected from a well on Thursday contained\u00a0 400,000 becquerels per litre of beta-ray emitting substances, the highest\u00a0 reading since the nuclear accident was triggered in March 2011.<\/p>\n

Samples in previous days had been showing levels of just 60 to 90\u00a0 becquerels per litre.<\/p>\n

The reading for radioactive tritium also shot up to a record high of\u00a0 790,000 becquerels, TEPCO said.<\/p>\n

The leaking storage tank was discovered in August and TEPCO said measures\u00a0 taken since then had included transferring water from the tank and removing the\u00a0 surrounding soil.<\/p>\n

\u201cOther wells are not showing such a high level. We need to take additional\u00a0 measures for the areas around this well,\u201d Masayuki Ono, TEPCO spokesman, told a\u00a0 press conference on Friday evening.<\/p>\n

TEPCO has removed most of the soil contaminated by the August spill, but\u00a0 might have failed to collect some radioactive materials, Ono said. — AFP<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
